Augustin Mawangu Mingiedi

Augustin Mawangu Mingiedi, a Congolese musician born around 1960, was the second leader and lead likembé player for the acclaimed band Konono N°1, taking over from his father, founder Mingiedi Mawangu, around 2009 after his father stopped touring, and officially following his passing in 2015. Known for his "brilliant and bold playing" and further developing the sound of the electric thumb piano with effect pedals, Augustin guided the group to continued international success, collaborating on projects with artists like Björk and Herbie Hancock. He led the band until his own death on October 16, 2017, at the age of 56, due to complications from diabetes, at which point his son, Makonda, inherited the role and instrument, continuing the family's third generation of leadership.
