Kalamashaka

Nickname Kalamashaka
Country Kenyan

Kalamashaka are the undisputed pioneers of Kenyan hip-hop, emerging from the Dandora slums in the mid-1990s to give a voice to the urban youth. Comprised of Kama, Johnny Vigeti, and Roba, the trio revolutionized the local music scene with their 1997 breakout hit "Tafsiri Hii," which proved that rapping in Swahili and Sheng could be both commercially successful and socially relevant. By blending hardcore beats with conscious lyrics addressing poverty, police brutality, and Pan-African pride, they laid the foundation for the Ukoo Flani Mau Mau collective and inspired an entire generation of artists to embrace their authentic Kenyan identity.
