Kulwa Salum was the band leader of the Morogoro Jazz Band, serving as the group's foundational anchor and saxophonist from its inception in 1944. A key architect of Tanzania's Muziki wa Dansi scene, he famously recruited the legendary Mbaraka Mwinshehe and helped pioneer a signature sound that blended Congolese Rumba with local East African rhythms. Through his leadership, the band became a professional powerhouse and a lasting symbol of the region's musical heritage.
