Brenda and the Big Dudes

Country South Africa

Brenda and the Big Dudes was a South African Afropop and bubblegum soul band formed in Johannesburg in 1983. Fronted by teenage vocalist Brenda Fassie, the group broke out with their late-1983 debut single, "Weekend Special," which became the fastest-selling record in South Africa at the time, moving over 200,000 copies. Their mix of synth-heavy baselines and Fassie’s soulful vocals filled township dance floors and caught international attention. By 1986, an American remix of their debut hit reached the US Billboard Hot Black Singles chart, leading to tours across the US, UK, Europe, and South America. After releasing mid-80s albums like Let's Stick Together and Higher and Higher, the band split in 1987 when Fassie launched her solo career, leaving behind a catalog that helped shape the future of South African pop music.
