Ebuya Lange, known by his stage name "Doris," was a core member and guitarist of the celebrated Congolese band Empire Bakuba. Born in Congo-Kinshasa (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), Doris contributed to the band's history from its formation in 1973 until it disbanded following the death of singer Pepe Kalle in 1998. Empire Bakuba evolved from the earlier neighborhood group African Choc, and Ebuya Lange, along with guitarist "Boeing 737" Kinanga Nanzao, formed the guitarists who augmented the core of three singers: Pepe Kalle, Dilu Dilumona, and "Papy Tex" Matolu Dode. The band became known for their lively rumba sound, which later adopted the speeded-up soukous style, all while maintaining a focus on meaningful lyrics that commanded attention from Kinshasa fans. The group was prolific in the studio and toured extensively throughout Africa, Europe, and North America, cementing its reputation as one of Congolese music's most stable and internationally acclaimed bands during its twenty-five-year existence.
