A STRANGE RELATIONSHIP
November 06, 2024 - 05:32 PM
FRANCO LUAMBO AND MOBUTU SESE SSEKO Franco always had a political bent which he expressed in many of his songs. While still in their teens, he had been a troublemaker before Congo got independence from the Belgians. One of his earliest forays into politics came in 1957 when one of his songs was banned by the colonial authorities. Soon after independence, Franco would sing a number of political songs, starting with the number “Ba Deputes botika Mbilinga, Mbilinga (Parliamentarians stop the confusion). He would follow this up with two more numbers: Docteur Moise Tshombe and Government ya Katanga Orientale. 1. Franco Sings Liwaya ya Lumuba (Liwa ya Emery)His most memorable political......
THE RISE OF M'BILIA BEL
October 31, 2024 - 07:15 PM
One day, Pascal-Emmanuel Sinamoyi Tabu, known as Tabuley Rochereau, was seated at home watching television when a young lady singer appeared on the screen. This lady was M'bilia Bel, during her time with Sam Mangwana. At that moment, Tabuley was penning a new song titled "Mpeve ya Longo" and was eager to find a female vocalist for it. After seeing her perform on television, he sent for M'bilia Bel. However, she was not interested; her ten years in the Zairean music industry had left a bad taste in her mouth. She turned down Rochereau's offer, stating that music was no longer appealing to her. Despite her initial reluctance, repeated persuasion from friends and acquaintances, who recognized......

THEM MUSHROOMS LEGEND
September 23, 2024 - 05:36 AM
IMPORTANT BITS ON THEM MUSHROOMS LEGEND. 1. Teddy Kalanda conceived the idea of composing 'hakuna matata' after he heard a European tourist attempt a conversation while performing in Mombasa in 1980. He made a song from it and recorded it at Polygram in Nairobi while the band had its first tour of the city. 2. Hakuna Matata, could be Kenya's most popular song in the history of music recording in Kenya. The song has been redone by dozens of big names across the globe, the song sold 200,000 thousand copies and the line became so popular that I remember t-shirts emblazoned 'hakuna matata' becoming popular in the late 1980s or thereabouts.A few of the......
