JOE MOPERO DIES
October 26, 2025 - 03:22 PM
Kenyan Musician Joe Mopero Dies Kenyan musician Joe Mopero is dead. According to his daughter, Joy Mopero, the veteran singer died of cardiac arrest at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday at Aster Healthcare Hospital, where he had been rushed after a short illness. Born Joseph Kariuki in Kipkabus, Uasin Gishu, in the 1960s, his family later relocated to Thika. While studying at Equator High School, his schoolmates nicknamed him Joe Mopero because he sang much like the Congolese musician Mopero wa Maloba, famed for the Cavacha style that was hugely popular in Kenya at the time. Joe Mopero sang with several bands — both Kenyan and Congolese — based in Nairobi. In the early 1990s, he formed......
WHAT IS RUMBA?
October 02, 2025 - 06:39 PM
Generally, music is made to be enjoyed—that is, listened to and danced to. Nonetheless, the urge to understand it better has often led to the classification of music into genres and other clusters. That’s why the issue of genre oftentimes escapes even the musicians themselves, and on some other occasions, discussants can't agree on which genre a song belongs to. Even the parameters that define these genres are also contested at times. These very parameters may also vary from genre to genre. For example, reggae as a genre is identified by the dominance of the rhythm guitar and the manner in which it is strummed, the predominant theme of resistance, and the near-religious......

WHAT IF FRANCO LUAMBO WAS ALIVE?
July 14, 2025 - 10:41 PM
Franco Luambo Luanzo Makiadi, the brightest star in the constellation that is Congolese music, was born on July 6, 1938. Were he alive today, he would be celebrating his 87th birthday. One cannot help but wonder—had death not stolen this immense talent from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the land of musical gods, where would he be today? Eighty-seven years is a long time. Most likely, he would have long retired. That’s a whole 27 years past the official retirement age in Kenya and many other countries. It is generally accepted that by age 60, age has taken its toll, and most people are well beyond their peak productivity. However, in music, some players stay in the game much......
A RISE TO THE TOP AGAINST ALL ODDS
May 12, 2025 - 04:49 PM
The Story of Malian music star, Salif Keita In a recent interview with Jabulani Radio, one physically disabled musician recounted every detail of his musical journey, explaining how he had a difficult childhood. However, he later requested that nothing about his disability be included in his story. This is clear evidence that, despite living in a more enlightened society, disability is still viewed through the same lens as it was in the past, when communities hid such children under the assumption that they were bad omens or brought shame to the family. These are the kinds of challenges that Salif Keita faced. Social ostracism, health complications due to albinism, and being born into a......

MUSA JUMA: THE LUNNA KIDI PROTEGE WITH A FANATIC FOLLOWING
March 18, 2025 - 06:20 PM
One evening in October 1992, LUNNA Kidi was invited to perform at the funeral of Zackayo Adero in Ramba. Zackayo Adero was a prominent businessman and a great friend of Kabaselle. At that time, the manager of the band was Ogola Oyier, a physics teacher at Otieno Oyoo Secondary School. A few minutes into the performance, one of the major amplifiers blew out. It was already too late to travel to Kisumu, more than 50 kilometers away, to buy a replacement. Even in Bondo, the shops had already closed. What were the options? Someone suggested sending an emissary to borrow an amplifier from any of the bands performing in Bondo. It was estimated that, given Kale’s status, any of the......

Bango bakanga biso mayele boye, (They've hoodwinked us this much) Nkisi ya bankoko bango baboyaka, (Traditional/herbal medication they declare evil) Bikeko ya bankoko bango bandimaka te, (All sculptures of our ancestors, they do not accept) Kasi na ndako ya Nzambe, biso tomonaka, (In church, we see sculptures as well) Tokosambela bikeko bitondo ndako, (We worship in churches full of sculptures, and this is right according to them) Mais bikeko yango se mindele, (But the sculptures in these churches are those of a white man) This is a translated excerpt from the song "Nakomitunaka". Ordinarily, it is credited as a Verckys Kiamuangana composition, as stated in the LP. However, Nyakwar......
BOUKAKA, THE MUSICIAN WHO ALSO WORE AN ACTIVISM CAP
February 06, 2025 - 08:47 AM
Sporadic sounds of gunfire pierced through the tranquil night of Brazzaville on 22nd February 1972, with noise gaining crescendo with every passing minute as dawn approached. When morning finally came reluctantly, the information had already spread that there had been an attempted coup d’etat against the government of Marien Ngouabi, who had been Republic of Congo president since 1968.However, forces loyal to the incumbent thwarted the attempt, with the military capturing the dissidents. Among those listed as arrested was Franklin Boukaka, a musician who had made a name for himself both in Brazzaville and Kinshasa and was one of the musical superstars of the time. In a strange twist......
