The Kassangas (Japheth and Anne Kassanga)

The Kassangas are a legendary husband-and-wife gospel duo consisting of Japheth and Anne Kassanga. Emerging from Nairobi's AIC Jericho Choir and marrying in 1989, they became pioneers of the married-couple duet style in Kenya. They achieved massive national fame in the late 1980s and 1990s with timeless classics like Maisha ya Mwanadamu and Nitumie Mimi Chombo, heavily popularized by Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) television programs. Beyond recording, the couple built the structural foundation for the country's modern gospel industry by establishing the Kasanga Music Centers distribution network, creating Hitscore Recording Studios, and mentoring over 100 prominent artists, including Esther Wahome and Angela Chibalonza. In recognition of his foundational impact on East African music infrastructure and copyright advocacy, Japheth Kassanga was awarded the Order of the Golden Warrior (OGW) by the Kenyan government.
