REMI: ANOTHER SIMARO?
October 20, 2024 - 04:21 PM
REMI: ANOTHER SIMARO? Music is just music. Great vocals, great rhymes, and great instrumentation, maybe expertly done guitar works by extremely creative musicians, great saxophone, etc., etc. Music is also meant to be danced to, which explains the void of logic in some lyrics. In fact, some music, like Jazz, does not even have lyrics at all; instead, it is an instrumental conversation between the percussions and the wind instruments. Music remains just that until, one introduces the late Congolese music legend, Simaro Lutumba who introduced a unique aspect of rumba Congolaise, with compositions that are philosophical and analytical. Despite equally having inspiring instrumentation......
UNLUCKY LUCKY: LOVED BY THE WORLD, STOPPED BY A BULLET
October 19, 2024 - 06:25 AM
UNLUCKY LUCKY: LOVED BY THE WORLD, STOPPED BY A BULLET. We are living in a crazy world, We we can't know what tomorrow brings, People are dying lie fries everyday, You will only know about it, when a man in a long black coat knocks your door, Because you are his next victim, This is an exerpt from Lucky Dube's song crazy world. The man in a long black coat, an artistic pictorial representation of death as captured in song, knocked the doors of the South African reggae star one afternoon of 18th October 2007 at Rossetenville a suburb of Johannesburg. Without recognizing him, three robbers shot at his car, just after he had dropped his children at their uncle's place. Although a......
FERRE'S MUSICAL JOURNEY
October 17, 2024 - 05:37 PM
FERRE'S MUSICAL JOURNEY "This is the day. It is finally with us” an ecstatic fan shouts to the media crew, as he runs bare-chested, towards the entrance of the Stade De Martyrs stadium, in Lingwala on the Northern outskirts of Kinshasa. His hands holding a placard with the name Ferre Gola emblazoned on it, he runs forth and back, shouting his voice hoarse. The day was June 24th, the day of the much-anticipated Ferre Gola concert. The excitement was palpable as the carnival mood engulfed the neighborhood. Crowds thronged the facility some in groups, some in isolation, some chanting, and some shouting. The day for the much-awaited Ferre Gola concert had come and fans had......
FRANCO'S VERY FIRST SONG/S
October 17, 2024 - 05:22 AM
FRANCO'S VERY FIRST SONG/S On November 17th and 18th 1953, Franco recorded his very songs. They were titled 'kombo ya loningisa' and 'lilima dis cheri was ngai'. Franco has partcipated in several recordings with the band the same year, but these weren't his compositions. The other members of the band were songbird Pauline Lisanga, Bikunda, Dewayon and others. By then Franco was 15-years-old and a member of Watam, which was Paul Ebengo Dewayon's band, signed at Loningisa Records. Remember the record label was the second in Leopoldville and was established in 1950 after Ngoma which was established in 1948. For eons basement dwellers have mentioned 'bolingo na ngai na......

BOY ON THE DRUMS
October 14, 2024 - 01:21 PM
BOY ON THE DRUMS This is Albert William Louis...most people know him as Awilo Longomba.Back then aged just 24 years old in the group Viva La Musica, during their first tour of Japan in 1986. They used to call him 'the boy on drums' as he was the youngest in the group when he joined a few years earlier. In one interview, he remembers his late father, the famous Rumba singer, Vicky Longomba one of the founding members of T.P OK Jazz. Awilo said his father was his greatest inspiration though he never wanted the young man to venture into music...but as if his destiny was marked- to be in music. To date, Awilo has celebrated close to 40 years in the music industry and has won more world music......
SUNSET COMES FOR PRINCESS JULLY
October 13, 2024 - 07:04 AM
SUNSET COMES FOR PRINCESS JULLY. At the peak of the Afrisa and OKJ rivalry in the mid-1970s, Tabuley made an experiment which gave his outfit an edge over Franco's band. He introduced a lady singer known as Marie Claire Mboyo, aka Mbilia Bell. She was a great composer, singer and dancer. She was also gorgeous, curvaceous and voluptuous. Paired with Tabuely a great showman on stage, she became an instant hit and the band's fortunes picked with shows getting packed. There seems to be magic in showbiz ladies that plays a magnet to keep me glued. Princess July, the benga song bird who died in a Migori hospital yesterday also resuscitated the dwindling fortunes of her husband the late......
BYE BYE BOYIBANDA
October 10, 2024 - 09:00 AM
BYE BYE BOYIBANDA "I have found a trustworthy confidant in a tree. The tree neither gossips about others nor does it share the secrets he shares with him. When the wind blows, the tree hums in response, but doesn't utter a word. He keeps everything to himself" This is a translation of an excerpt from the late Michel Boyibanda's song 'nzete esololaka na mutu te'. The composer finds a clever way of telling off rumour mongers, whom he alleges talk like a "tchakou" (parrot). When a conservationist asked this writer which song captures an element of conservation, so that they could play it as a theme song, this was the song that came to mind. It doesn't really address......
BIOGRAPHY OF LE GRAND MAITRE
October 09, 2024 - 04:05 AM
BIOGRAPHY OF LE GRAND MAITRE Franco Luambo Makiadi, the Congolese legendary musician, continues to hold a special place in the hearts of millions of music lovers across the globe, 35 years into his death. His music sells in shops across the continent and beyond, in Latin America, the USA, and Europe. Online applications created long after his death are also dominated by his music. His fan base has continued to swell with younger fans, probably born after his death, getting hooked, more than three decades into his death, with fans and musicians marveling at how magical he was to head a band that stayed intact for 37 years, churning out chart-topping records, estimated to be slightly more......
ANOTHER GOD OF TWIST
October 07, 2024 - 04:16 PM
JOHN NZENZE, ANOTHER GOD OF TWIST The advancement in technology that allows the use of computer programs to create beats has seriously eroded creativity in music.' John Amutabi Nzenze, a big name in Kenyan music, once reported Kelvin Ogome of KUTV. In his estimation, musicians nowadays no longer learn how to play instruments, i.e., guitar, saxophone, trumpets, etc., and this has encouraged laziness in music, with wannabes releasing 'hits' that can't stand the test of time. When a detailed history of Kenya's music is finally written, twisty will feature prominently as a genre that took the country's entertainment by storm in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, among the names......
