SAM MANGWANA's MUSICAL JOURNEY
April 25, 2024 - 11:45 PM
SAM MANGWANA's MUSICAL JOURNEYThe angelic voice of the Legendary Sam. It’s just so smooth. It brings to mind the golden age of Congolese rhumba, though it’s tinged with nostalgia. His sweet voice keeps sounding new to the ears despite the years it reigned the musical world. Such a rich career spanning six decades just can’t be summed up in a 90-minutes. We begin by reflecting on his musical journey at the end of the 60s. Mangwana made his professional debut in 1963 with the Congo-Kinshasa rumba band, African Fiesta, owned and led by Tabu Ley Rochereau. Mangwana moved across the Congo River to Brazzaville where he formed a short-lived group called Los Batchichas. He......

THEO BLAISE KOUNKOU.
April 20, 2024 - 09:05 PM
Theo Blaise Kounkou. In the Madingo-Kayes village, located in the Republic of Congo, there lived a young boy named Theo Blaise Kounkou. From the moment he could walk, he was drawn to the beat as the streets were filled with musical rhythms. Tapping his feet to the rhythm of the drums that echoed through the streets was a norm on his childhood. This unleashed his extraordinary gift of music. From a tender age, Theo was drawn to the rhythms of life around him. He would tap his feet to the beat of the rain, hum along with the wind, and mimic the melodies of the birds in the trees. His parents, recognizing his talent, gave him a small drum, and from that day on, Theo's musical journey began. As......

REMEMBERING A CONGOLESE RUMBA KING
March 31, 2024 - 08:00 PM
Hail Rumba King One of Africa's undisputed biggest hitmakers, Tabu Ley Rochereau, a star with a honeyed voice went on to become one of the continent's most successful music impresarios. He was born Pascal-Emmanuel Sinamoyi Tabu in either 1937 or 1940 (sources differ) in a small village in Bandudu province in what was then still the Belgian Congo and is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. He became one of Africa's most prominent musicians — dubbed "the voice of lightness" for his effortlessly sweet tone — and along the way was one of the pioneers of Congolese rumba, the dance music that managed to meld the sounds of a Cuban bandstand with an African lilt and that later......
