Leonard Dembo, born Kwangwarai Gwaindepi in 1959, was a legendary Zimbabwean musician and a pioneer of the Sungura genre, best known for his lead guitar mastery and poetic Shona lyrics. After a brief stint with the band The Outsiders, he formed Barura Express in 1985, leading to a decade of unprecedented commercial success. His 1991 masterpiece, Chitekete, became a cultural phenomenon, selling over 100,000 copies and even being featured during the 1996 Miss World pageant. Despite his massive fame, Dembo remained famously private and camera-shy until his untimely death on April 9, 1996, at the age of 37.
