Orchestra Marrabenta Star de Moçambique was a pivotal force in popularizing Mozambican urban dance music, known as marrabenta, to the world. Formed in 1979 and essentially serving as the big band for Radio Moçambique, the group drew together some of the country's finest musicians and dancers. They were led by the "golden voice of Mozambique," vocalist Wazimbo (Humberto Carlos Benfica), and also featured the soulful vocals of female singer Mingas. The Orchestra developed a distinctive, full, and funky style of marrabenta, blending local rhythms with electric guitars, powerful horn lines, and a touch of Congolese guitar work, which made them immensely popular at home. Facing a lack of recording facilities due to the devastating civil war in the 1980s, the band traveled to Zimbabwe to record, leading to the album Independance and subsequent European tours. This effort helped bring international recognition to marrabenta, particularly through the emotional, spontaneous ballad "Nwahulwana," which became Wazimbo's signature track after being featured in a Microsoft commercial and the film The Pledge. Though the original group disbanded in the mid-1990s as the country's music industry struggled to recover after the civil war, the Orchestra's influential sound laid a crucial foundation for subsequent generations of Mozambican artists.
