Zuhura Swaleh is a pioneering Kenyan musician and a foundational figure in the Zilizopendwa and Taarab genres, best known for her rhythmic, coastal-inspired sound. Born in 1947 in Nairobi’s Pumwani district, she later moved to the coast where she led the influential group Zuhura & Party, distinguishing herself through the use of the taishokoto and faster, dance-oriented rhythms like Chakacha. Her career, spanning several decades, produced timeless classics such as "Singe Tema" and "Jino La Pembe," blending sophisticated Swahili poetry with vibrant arrangements that cemented her legacy as a cornerstone of East African musical heritage.
